Irish Cancer Society calls for grant applications from affiliated cancer support centres in Mayo

The Irish Cancer Society’s grant aid programme for affiliated cancer support centres is now open for applications and the society is inviting all affiliated centres, including Cara Iorrais Cancer Support Centre and Mayo Cancer Support Association to apply for funds. The Irish Cancer Society expects to grant more than half a million euro this year to its affiliates and is welcoming applications from new cancer support centres which wish to become affiliates of the society. The society’s affiliation programme which runs in three-year cycles is a network of groups all across Ireland which provide information and support services to people living with cancer.

Irish Cancer Society appeals to businesses to get on board and support Daffodil Day

Daffodil Day is taking place on Friday, March 27, and recently the Irish Cancer Society, along with the campaign’s lead partner, Dell Ireland, launched its appeal to companies and businesses all over Ireland to show they care by signing up to do their bit for those affected by cancer on Daffodil Day. More than 30,000 people will be diagnosed with cancer this year, and as cancer incidence grows so does demand on the Irish Cancer Society’s free national services – increasing the need for the business community and members of the public to support Daffodil Day. The overall target for Daffodil Day 2015 is €3.5 million.

CLIMB programme at Tuam Cancer Care Centre helps children come to terms with a parent’s cancer diagnosis

Cancer affects a whole family, not just the person who is ill. Many parents dealing with a cancer diagnosis acknowledge they do not know how to talk to their children about cancer. This breakdown in communication not only heightens the stress and fears of the children, it isolates them and prevents them from being an active member of the family. Participation in the CLIMB programme helps to support communication of these complex feelings, increases the children’s knowledge about cancer, and improves communication between parents and children.

The Oesophageal Cancer Fund (OCF) and Lollipop Day sponsor, Medtronic, would like to thank all the volunteers in Westmeath who helped with Lollipop Day fundraising on February 27 and 28 this year, without which Lollipop Day could not happen. Lollipop Day is a volunteer-led movement which relies on public support to keep research centres open and keep oesophageal cancer in the public consciousness.

More demand for services as cancer rates rise

New statistics from the Irish Cancer Society have revealed 19 people are being diagnosed with cancer in Mayo every week and cancer rates have increased by four per cent over the last three years.
